Connecting to FTP via FTP over SSL, or FTPS

All modern FTP client's, like FileZilla, FireFTP, Fetch, SmartFTP and others include the option to connect securely using FTPS.

However, the sad truth is that most web hosts have not discontinued support for FTP using clear text authentication for one reason: "Dreamweaver."

Adobe Dreamweaver versions prior to CS5.5 do not allow for secure FTP via FTPS. While SFTP is offered as an option in prior versions of Dreamweaver, SFTP requires you have a dedicated Internet connection IP address, and requires our server technician be involved each time your IP changes and you wish to connect via FTP.

For this reason Dreamweaver users accustomed to simply clicking the "Put" publishing button to upload files or changes will need to use alternate FTP software to do so, or upgrade to the latest version of Adobe Dreamweaver CS5.5.

Things to know when connecting securely using FTP:

When you start up your FTP client software make sure to choose FTPS before connecting, sometimes called FTP over TLS/SSL, FTPES, Explicit FTP, or FTP with TLS.

Once you connect, an "Unknown Certificate" or similar message may appear. Just click the Accept or Trust Certificate button and this message will go away nicely.
